Cold Fronts Set the Sailfish Season Off the Inlet Near 2700 North Ocean

In early January 2025, the coldest weather Florida had seen in nearly two years arrived on the same day the Silver Sailfish Derby began. The Fishing Wire reported temperatures in the low 40s, gusting northwest winds, and a sold-out 50-boat fleet fishing off the Palm Beaches in seas of 5 to 7 feet, with an occasional 9-footer. By the end of the second day, anglers had released 293 sailfish.

One year later, the Derby ran again with 50 boats entered, and the fleet released 106.

For anyone living at the south end of Singer Island, close to the inlet the 2027 fleet must check out through every morning, that gap is the most useful fact about the winter ahead. The calendar tells you when the season opens. The wind decides how good any given day will be.

The Same Fleet, Three Very Different Winters

The West Palm Beach Fishing Club has run the Derby since January 1935. It calls it the oldest sailfish tournament still running anywhere, and it has missed only the years 1943 through 1945. Ernest Hemingway once sponsored a Derby trophy, and the club credits the event with creating the red release pennant. The format has barely changed in recent years: two weekdays of fishing, amateur anglers only, four lines per boat, and 20-pound test line at most. That consistency makes the release totals a rough measure of how well the fish are biting off the Palm Beaches in early January.

Derby year Total sailfish releases Top boat Top boat's releases
January 2024 149 Native Son 11
January 2025 293 Fish On 14
January 2026 106 Native Son 8

In 2026, 50 boats released 106 fish over two days, about one sailfish per boat per day. That matches what Florida Sportsman calls a normal day: one or two releases in eight hours of fishing between December and April along southeast Florida, Palm Beach included. The 2025 fleet averaged close to three per boat per day. Most of that came on the first day, during the front. Only 109 of the 293 were released on day two, after the wind eased and swung around to the east.

The 2024 Derby shows the opposite conditions. According to InTheBite, the first day was calm offshore with light rain, which made it hard to fly kites and present live baits. The eventual winner, Captain Art Sapp's Native Son, had only two fish after that first day and made up the rest on day two as a south wind built.

What a Cold Front Does Offshore

Florida Sportsman puts the start of South Florida's sailfish season in November and says the peak south of Fort Pierce generally arrives after New Year, along with the repeated cold fronts. In the magazine's description, the best pattern after a front starts with a northwest wind around 20 knots. The wind then shifts north and northeast and eases to about 15 knots within roughly 72 hours.

That is the 2025 Derby's first day almost exactly. It also changes how a winter fishing day should be planned from the south end of the island. The window that matters is the two or three days after a front passes, and it can arrive in any week from November through spring. Sailfish Marina describes itself as the closest marina to the Palm Beach/Lake Worth Inlet and says the Gulf Stream is minutes away. So a resident who watches the wind forecast can be fishing during that window without driving far.

Where the Derby Day Starts and Ends

The 2027 Silver Sailfish Derby will be the 90th. The captain's meeting is Wednesday, January 6, at the West Palm Beach Fishing Club. Fishing runs Thursday, January 7, and Friday, January 8, and the Derby dinner follows on Saturday, January 9, at The Sailfish Club in Palm Beach. The fleet is already full. The club caps it at 50 boats and is directing new inquiries to a waitlist.

Even so, the whole event runs through the inlet and the marina next to it. The 2027 rules set this daily schedule:

  1. Between 6:30 and 8:00 a.m., every boat must check out visually at the Palm Beach Inlet, showing its boat number and getting a spoken confirmation before it leaves.
  2. Boats that leave after 8:00 a.m. check out at Sailfish Marina instead.
  3. Lines go in at 8:00 a.m. and come out at 4:00 p.m.
  4. After lines-out, every boat must return by water to Sailfish Marina to turn in its daily score sheet and SD card.

Sailfish Marina is the only official weigh and record station. According to The Fishing Wire's 2025 account, fish hooked and reported before the 4 p.m. call still count if they are landed afterward. That year, Fish On released its last sailfish at 4:11 p.m. and won the tournament.

Some of the Derby's best results have come from boats docked right there. Mallard, a 54-foot Scully berthed at Sailfish Marina, took Top Daily Boat on the first day in 2025 with 10 releases and finished third overall. That year's Top Lady Angler was Tatiana Usova of Singer Island, who released six sailfish aboard Charlie and won the award for the third time.

Getting on the Water When the Derby Is Full

Mallard is also one of the boats in Sailfish Marina's charter fleet, along with Permitted, Reel Candy, Reel Deal, Showtime, Fish On, Island Time, Top Gun, Remix II and Triton. Permitted, a 27-foot boat, was Top Small Boat in the 2025 Derby with six releases, and on the first day its lone angler hooked and landed three sailfish at once.

The Sailfish Marina charter page lists boats from 27 to 65 feet that fish year-round. Rates depend on the boat and the length of the trip. Each boat takes up to six people, every booking needs a $100 non-refundable deposit, and cancellations require 72 hours' notice. Live bait, tips and refreshments cost extra. That 72-hour cancellation window is about the same length as the post-front pattern Florida Sportsman describes. So booking a trip as a front is forecast, then keeping or canceling it as the forecast firms up, fits within the marina's own rules.

For residents who want to compete, Operation Sailfish runs January 13 to 17, 2027, and starts and ends at Sailfish Resort & Marina, 98 Lake Drive. The kickoff is January 13, a military fishing day follows on January 14, competition runs January 15 and 16, and awards are January 17. The entry fee is $1,200 per boat plus tax through December 30, 2026, and $1,700 plus tax after that.

During the season, the club hosts speaker seminars on select Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m., usually once or twice a month. The club says they are open to members, guests and anyone else who is interested. The clubhouse is at 201 5th Street in West Palm Beach.

From Shore, and the Rules That Come With It

The nearest public shore fishing on the island is at Ocean Reef Park, 3860 North Ocean Drive. The park is open sunrise to sunset and allows saltwater fishing, though not in the guarded swimming area. Peanut Island Park, next to the inlet, can only be reached by boat. Fishing there is limited to designated areas, including a fishing pier.

Licensing is different at the two parks. According to FWC's shoreline license guidance, Florida residents who fish only from land or a structure attached to land can get a free shoreline license. That license does not cover fishing from a boat, or from an island you reached by boat. A shuttle ride to Peanut Island therefore needs a different license, and non-residents are not eligible for the shoreline license at all.

FWC's billfish regulations for state waters set a 63-inch minimum size for sailfish, measured from the lower jaw to the fork of the tail, along with a bag limit of one billfish per person per day and a year-round season. FWC adds that a federal HMS Angling Permit is required in federal waters. In federal waters, NOAA Fisheries uses the same 63-inch minimum and lists no federal bag limit for sailfish. It requires the vessel to carry an HMS Angling or Charter/Headboat permit that covers everyone aboard. This is general information, not legal advice. Please confirm the current requirements for your own trip directly with FWC or NOAA before you go.

The fleet will start checking out of the inlet at 6:30 a.m. on January 7, and the boats will be back at Sailfish Marina after 4 p.m. to report their totals.
